Louis Armstrong – Basin Street Blues

Jazz historian Al Rose defined jazz as “two or more musical voices improvising collectively in two-four or four-four time on any known melody and ‘syncopating.’ ” Though this definition does not include soloists like Louis Armstrong, it describes the creative freedom of this style that centered and flourished on the streets of New Orleans.

New Orleans Jazz has a swinging, stomping, syncopated beat that makes you want to dance! It also has a simple melodic quality.

Congo Street – [The Nevile Brothers]

Congo Square In 1764, when the Spanish took over New Orleans, the Creoles needed work, which led to many of them becoming traveling musicians. These musicians were the inventors of early jazz, through their expression of African dancing and music. On Sundays, they would gather on a grassy plain on the northwestern edge of the city, where slaves were allowed to dance. This area became known as the Congo Square because of the use of African cultural elements and dances.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  1. This is a great post Isadora, with wonderful music from the finest of artists. The comments are part of what makes the post so very special. And what I liked best was your interchange with Lorna. Taste is such a subjective thing… sometimes it brings us together… other times, it tears us apart. And the beautiful way you handled the differences in taste, made me want to see a lot more of what you’re doing, and what you like. In my visits to your country, I fell head over heels in love with Jazz, and it has stayed with me as I most loved music ever since. There are so many artists I enjoy. But my very favorite is Art Pepper. I love John Coltrane too. And listen a lot to pianists… Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, and Dave NcKenna, who’re favorites. So glad to have met you…

  4. You know, Jazz is a thing with me. I just don’t like it. Any of it. I’ve tried, oh Lordy, I’ve tried. I just can’t stand it. Someone should write a jazz song about hating jazz. Or would that be a blues song… 😐

    • Jazz isn’t for everyone. I was introduced to it by my hubby. He played jazz in a band. I don’t think it’s for everyone. The beauty of music is that there’s so many genres that, eventually, you find the one you like and enjoy it. I’m a fan of all types of music. With a dancing background, you develop an ear for just about anything. Stand up and be proud to voice your opinion on jazz. What a boring world it would be if we all loved the same things. Bravo Lorna !!!! 😳 😄

    • I remember, Becca, that you mentioned New Orleans when I talked about the ornate iron work, front porches and
beautiful weeping willows and magnolia trees. It has to be visited to be appreciated. One of our favorite place to visit.
My hubby has played jazz all of his life. A river cruise is on our bucket list. I’m glad I brought you back home again. 😃

    • I’ve got a BIG grin on my face because I was able to help you wake up. Your welcome on that, Gilly ….. 😃
I think jazz has changed a great deal over the years. The original jazz creators would be very disappointed
that the traditions have not been preserved. There are very few maintaining real jazz. I hope more musicians
realize the greatness of it. My hubby has been playing jazz forever. I get to still hear those cool tunes.
Hope you tapped your toes this morning. 👣
