Friday Fictioneers – The Last Letter

The house was eerily quiet. The chilly air, a reminder of her long-term estrangement from her mother.

Sorting through years of her mementos was going to be laboriously stressful. It would be easier once Monique arrived.

She opened a leather box her mother kept on her desk. Letters from France?

Angelique read the last letter:

‘Dearest,
I miss you, though your touch lingers still.
Without you, time is an empty space.
I long to hold you. My heart aches for your return.
Come back soon, Mon amour.
Je t’aime,
Pierre’

Ergo, the secret of our French names finally revealed.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  2. loved this one and found myself wondering what would be revealed at the end. My assumption was more like “My father’s name was David” 🙂 I like your ending much better!

  6. This was lovely. Had a very “Bridges of Madison County” feel to it. The children learning of their mother’s secrets…
    I truly enjoyed this!

  8. did her mother die already? i’m assuming she did.

    • Yes, her mother has died. Her twin sister and her will have to sort through the mementos.
I was having a difficult time getting her passing in the story since the letter was important
to add. I should have gone another way. But, too late now. I’m glad you were able to sort it out.
      Thnak you …

  9. We never really know our parents’ secrets. Perhaps we shouldn’t ever know them.

    • I think you’re right. The iamge we have of our parents could change in an instant with a secret such as this one.
But, since Angelica was estranged from her mother this letter could have explained many things.
I think I’ll consider writing a longer version of this story. So many questions and ethics, morals, etc.
Thank you for the insightful comment. Tracey. : )

  12. Lovely story, Isadora. I wonder how many surprises turn up when attics are cleaned. A great ending twist. People send emails these days so there are no old letters lying around. Good writing. 🙂 — Suzanne

    • Hi Gayle,
It’s good to see you here. I’ve been writing these 100 word challenges to tighten up my writing. It’s been difficult at times. But, I’m enjoyingg it too.
Perhaps, you’d like to join in. I always enjoyed your stories. : )
Sometimes, secrets such as the one might be best let unknown. Since Angelique was estranged from her mother there may be other secrets that could help solve the issues they had. Sadly, with the mother gone, one can only speculate.
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day … Enjoy your beautiful family.

      • Hi Izzy, I participated with Friday Fictioneers for awhile…maybe it would help kick-start my interest again to try those short stores again. I did enjoy it. A nice group of people over there too! And thank you for the compliment for my stories. 🙂

You have a nice Mother’s Day too. Some of us are going to go visit my mother in Orlando to spend the day with her and two of my sisters. It should be fun. Love and hugs…Gayle

    • There are so many twists to this story.
The daughters names might have been a daily reminder for the mother of her faraway lover. There’s a mysterious edge to this one.
Thank you Bjorn for your dialogue on my story.
