Friday Fictioneers – I’m Late – I’m Late

The subway doors opened. People poured off the train like swarms of ants.

Milagros rushed to get to her job. She hadn’t eaten and felt faint. She was late but needed to eat something. Her stomach growled as she ordered coffee and bagel in an out-of-breath voice.

“To go?”, the barista asked.

“Yes,” she said impatiently.

Panic took over the hunger pangs as she searched for her wallet.

Gone.

This can’t be happening.

From behind she heard, “Is this yours?”

“Yes!!!”

“It was on the floor”.

“I can’t thank you enough”

Sure you can, How ‘bout a date?”

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of whom I am no matter what venue I choose to express it.

  2. I wonder if he asks too much… better just to smile and say it’s OK… maybe may I share my coffee with you…

    • Those are all good ways to approach someone but what if this is the first time he’s seen her
and doesn’t want to lose touch. Ahhhh …. dating can be difficult for some. I’m happy I’m not
in that zone. Hey … thanks, Bjorn, for the great comment.

  3. I refuse to look at this cynically… Must be because I, myself, am in the first stages of love… And why not? There are no limits to how we can meet, are there?

    • BRAVO, Dale. As a hopeless romantic, I’d like to believe he’s a nice guy who thought this young woman
was attractive and, maybe, hopefully available for dating. YUP … we all have to meet our mates somewhere. Work, activity, party …
or school: like me. I hope you’re having a wonderful time with your new amour. LOVE is grand. We all need and wish for it.
All the best, Dale. Hope you’re weekend is a super one.

  4. Because there is so much in the news about sexual predators these days, that’s how I read this piece. Whatever your intention, I enjoyed how you interpreted the picture. Very glad you’re back. Alicia

    • When I started writing my story I had no idea where it was going to go. I went from saleswoman to historic Bloomingdales building
to time issues. Finally, it all came together as a somewhat romance. But, I felt my ending gave it a sinister skeptical twist.
I always go round and round because of the brief 100 words we’re allowed. I’m happy you enjoyed it, Alicia,
and I appreciate you welcoming me back. Have a super weekend.

  7. Dear Isadora,
Love – definitely love. But Milagros could be a little careful. “Call me. Midday. Here’s my cell phone number…”
They’ll have a story to tell their grandchildren, won’t they?
    Best wishes

  8. Cool little snapshot of how it can really happen. This would be a great opening for a romantic movie 🙂

    • I’m pleased you were able to pick that up. As a hopeless romantic, I’ve been toying with the idea of a short romance story.
I’d had this is my files for awhile. The photo brough it to light. I think it might be time to expand on it.
Thank you for visiting and leaving your lovely positive comment.

  9. I would have to guess that the man in your lovely tale has either found his” love at first sight” or is something of a dangerous being. Of course, I would like the first guess to be true.
    Beautifully written.

    • I was going for a frustrated start of her day when I began writing the story. It morphed into
a helpful person to make her feel life isn’t all that bad. Then, when I finished the story, it
sounded like he could be a purse thief. I think I would rather have him be a good guy admiring a pretty lady.
Glad you enjoyed my story, Moon. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

  10. Tell me he didn’t steal it from her pocket, or is that the cynic in me?

    • You brought a smile to my face, Sandra. I started the story with the concept that she was having a hectic start to her day.
As I was writing, it morphed into more drama for her with a knight in shining armor saving the day. Then, after I finished
the story, it seemed like he could have stolen her wallet while she was distracted. I think I’d prefer to have him be a good
looking guy talking to a frazzled good looking gal and connecting. BUT …. I could go the other way too. MMmmmm …. something
to think about. Thanks for the dialog ….

    • The story is totally fiction except for the rushing and hurrying part. When I was in my 20’s I worked in the Manhattan, New York
Wall Street District. It was a struggle everyday to get to work on time. A real nightmare ….
I think I’d like to believe they found love. But, on further inspection of my story I got the feeling he could have been up to no good.
Mmmmm … I may have to go back and write a longer version. Thanks for visiting and leaving your wonderful comment, Laurie.

    • I’d like to thin that it’s a knight in shining armor saving the day for Milagros.
After I’d finished writing the story it seemed that it could go another way. He could have been a pickpocket.
      YIKES … I’m a romantic, I’ll go with LOVE found at a coffee shop. ~~~ : – )
Glad you loved my story, Nan. Thank you …

    • Although the story is totally fiction, the train ride and lateness was a bit of my own drama when I had to get to work in Manhattan’s Wall Street district. It was a zoo everyday. Anyway, After I read the finished story, I got the feeling this guy could have been a pickpocket. Mmmmm …. NY
and all that goes with it. Glad you found the story to be a good read, James. Thank you …

  19. Querida Isadora,

I hope this means that things are looking up for Milagros and this isn’t some creep of a stalker. Bien escrito.
