Friday Fictioneers – The Pink Dress

Mother asked me to get one of Oma’s dresses for the viewing.

Walking through the house, I could feel Oma in every room.

She was with me; guiding me.

Small things meant a lot to her; like working in the garden, a walk in the park or sitting on her front porch listening to the birds sing.

Oma kept an impeccable home. Her treasured crystal, Rogaska, bowl on her dining room table always had fresh flowers or plants.

Opa loved her pink gown from their 75 anniversary.

He’d said, “My heart fluttered when we danced.”

This will be the dress.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  4. great story. i remember the time i was in a village in bulgaria. one of the traditions there was to bury the deceased on her wedding dress so that the husband who preceded her would recognize her in the afterlife.

  5. I found it heartwarming. The picked out a beautiful lavender dress for my grandmother’s funeral. It was her favorite color. Going through her house, I could definitely sense her presence in every room, but especially the kitchen. So many happy memories there.

    • Thank you, Russell. I recall when I was asked to picket the dress for my mother-in-laws viewing.
Even in the sad moments the heart of the person lives on in their gentle spirit surrounding their space.
Lovely recollections … thank you for sharing them, commenting and visiting.

    • Thank you for your incredibly complimentary comment, Gilly.
Many of my stories start deep down in my heart from experiences
or witnessing events I’m in the midst of seeing them happen.
I’m pleased you loved this one too.

  7. I think love last beyond death… of course it had to be that dress

    • I believe that love exists here and beyond. A bond with two people that have been
married a long time is a bond forever. I’m happy you agree that love lasts beyond, Bjorn.
And, yes, that had to be the dress. Thank you for visiting and leaving your wonderful comment.
