Inside the Mind of Isadora

Friday Fictioneers – Sinister Words

The sun gleamed on the table.

Mrs. Goodman cleaned her home and windows all the time; a cleaning cloth always in her hand.

Ella and I played on the floor with our barbie dolls. If we didn’t wake William, we could have candy. The colorful candy was tempting. I couldn’t believe Ella never took one.

When Ella left to get her dollhouse, Mr. Goodman walked into the room.

He was tall, thin with a chalky wry face.

“Do you like candy?” he asked.

I just stared.

He pointed to his zipper saying, “I have candy, if you’d like.”

I froze.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  3. Disgusting! Well done, Isadora!
These creeps don’t ever give up. In my later 20’s, I cut through a neighbour’s yard. The door flew open, and the friendly very old guy who lived there was shaking a box of chocolates. The back lighting only added to the creepiness, as he shook the box and called out, “want some candy little girl?”
I laughed in his face, and called him a sick pervert!

    • YIKES … it’s good that you were able to leave quickly and not be lured into his trap.
It’s a grim and revolting subject. More and more is being said about it. I believe the #metoo movement has given
women and even children more confidence.
Thank you for sharing you terror experience and for leaving a comment, Resa.

  6. Now we know why you never want to wake William. What a sicko. I hope he gets caught before any damage is done.

    • ‘Sicko’ describes the predator perfectly. Sadly, vicitms suffer all of their lives. It’s a scar they always feel. Thank you for commenting, Russell. This is a subject that has come to life more now that the #metoo movement voice is being heard.

  8. A horrifying issue brought to light where it needs to be so parents can stay ever vigilant. You built the story so well with the ending as a sucker punch. A tragic reality with permanent damage for far too many.

  10. Powerful story, Isadora. Like many of the comments, you left me feeling rather sick at the end. Super story-telling, though. I was particularly impressed with the way you made it clear that Mrs Goodman knew what her husband was up to. “Mrs. Goodman cleaned her home and windows all the time; a cleaning cloth always in her hand.” Shades of Lady Macbeth!

    • Thank you, Penny for visiting, reading and favorably commenting on my story. I’m smiling from ear to ear.
Actually, I’m not sure if Mrs. Goodman knew what her husband was up to. But, you bring up a great point. One never knows … do one.

  11. So well written Issy, but a bit too close to home for me. It brought horrible memories flooding back, although even after over six decades, they are always quite near the surface. I wonder if these despicable perpetrators realise just how devastatingly damaging their selfish and perverted actions are.

    • I’m sure the predators do not know or even care about the damage they cause. It’s a sick all-about-themselves mentality. I was thrilled when the #metoo movement was started. It brought to light other issues too. Sad …!!! Thank you for commenting so favorably about the very difficult subject. Have a wonderful week, Sylvia. Hope you’re enjoying our milder temps.

  12. Querida Isadora,

Having been molested by fathers of two of my childhood playmates, this chilled me to the bone. Bien escrito come siempre, mi amiga.

    Shalom y abrazos,

    • Querida Rochelle,
Lo siento mucho … que pena que te haya pasado. Es una tristeza. Espero que tu corazón haya curado de esa tragedia. Abrazos 🤗 😍
Es un cueto que me dijo una amiga cuando ya era mayor. Ella nunca dijo nada. Hasta este día sufre.
These predators don’t always have foreign faces. It’s the main reason children are lured by them. I hope more of them are exposed out of the shadows they lurk in.
Gracias y Abrazos, mi amiga 💕

  25. That made me cringe. No wonder her friend didn’t take candy. Hope she made it out of there, out of his predatory ways.

    • I haven’t quite developed the entire story. It’s based on a childhood friend who confided in me in her own innocent way. She was 5 and never told. Predators lurk in the shadows. Creepy … !!!

  27. Well done. This broke my heart. No one in our neighborhood was abused this way, no one beaten or abused. We were so happy and unaware of threats like this. Allowed to be a rumble tumble mass of legs and arms, shrieks and childhood competition. And to imagine a man would present his private parts as candy to a child (or anyone 😉 ) is icky. Thanks for the shivers. I mean that in a good way.

    • Yes, Alicia, it’s very sad. So many children are vulnerbale to predators like this. I lived in a neighborhood that had a million stories. Some were good and some were bad … this one, unfortunately, is a fictionalized tale of an incident a friend told me about as an adult. Glad you enjoyed it but sorry it broke your heart. Sending healing LOVE your way. Have a super weekend … Isadora 😎

  29. This was a tale of a sickening man about to ruin a young girl’s life. Sadly, this happens more than we like to admit.
    Well written.
