Friday Fictioneers – The Hat Factory

“It’s time for me to go, Gloria. It’s 3:00 already. Where does the time go?”

Grandma worked the night shift at the hat factory. Not many liked working the 4 to midnight hours.

Listening to her hat-making stories was fascinating.

As a child, I always wore the most stylish hats. She made them from leftover scraps of material from her work station.

Yesterday, I overheard her angry words about Mr. Grossman.

“He had the nerve to presume he could touch my breast,” she told my Mom. “Here, I thought he’d been generous with the leftover materials. I quit.”

Author: Inside the Mind of Isadora

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  1. Such behavior can easily make one skeptical of anyone who’s generous… sad. Muy bien escrito, mi amiga!

  2. You mean to tell me it doesn’t stop when you’re a grandma? Oy!

    • I guess it doesn’t stop even if you’re a grandmother. My grandmother looked like she was 30 when she was 50 and quite a looker. I carry her same genes. I’ll be 73 in July people say I look like I’m 50. Not a bad thing to inherit. So yes, Oy Vey – such a bad compliment, for sure. Thank you, Linda for commenting. Be Safe … Isadora 😎

Well … I’m from down South. lol I used to see the Cable Guy show. It was hilarious. Every redneck down here was shown on the show. Funny !!! I love seeing the baseball hats hanging in their pick up truck windows. It’s a culture all its own. Buen escritoire, mi amigo.

      • Well, well, well, who’d a-thunk it? And here I thought you were a New Yorker (why I thought that, I don’t know — maybe I had you mixed up with someone else). And, yes, Lost In Space is one of my favorites, too! I have some toys related to it.

        • You thunk correccto-mundo. I am a New York … well, actually, a Brooklyn-ite. I was born and raised in Brooklyn in Williamsburg, the Hasidic cult area. I thought I was Jewish growing up but I went to Catholic school from Puerto Rican parents. BIG cause for confusion. LOLOL
          WOW … a collector of memorabilia. 👌
Gracias por su visita … Isadora 😎

  4. Quite right to leave her job – but I hope she finds an alternative. 🙂

  5. I’d like to say things have improved for the women in work since the 1950s, I guess they have to some degree, but not enough.

  6. Good for her!
No amount leftover fabric is ‘down-payment’ for fondling.

    • Na’ama,
I can’t seem to leave a comment on your story. It happens with only a few of the bloggers I follow. Can you check your SPAM? in the meantime, here’s your comment: Wonderful comments left by everyone on your unique take of the prompt.
Since I worked in the art world color has always been a heartwarming visual for me.
I cn’t imagine not seeing colors. I thought people with color blindness see in black and white or shades of one color. I have a frined who paints in blues because it’s a color he sees. Liked your tale …. Isadora 😎 (copy, paste on your and delete 👍🏻)

  7. Ah, so sorry your grandmother had to go through something like that. What is it with men? I REALLY just don’t get it!!!! Thanks for sharing some of your history.

    • Powerful women raising their voices have made these situations known. My grandmother was a very indepent strong women. I always admired that in her. She created her own business at home and sold them to shops. She made lemonade out of lemons. Thank you, Lish. I hope my comment showed up in your SPAM. I didn’t see it anywhere. I feel awful about this that’s happening on my commenting at blogs. Have a peaceful week of joy … Izzy 😎

  11. Querida Isadora,

Nada este gratis ¿Verdád? Bien escrito. Me hace enojar. I had a similar experience with a chiropractor. Elderly retired man when I was younger. I found his services weren’t free either.

    Shalom y cariño,

    • Querida Rochelle,
      es verdad nada es gratis!!!
This is a very watered down version of an incident that happened to my grandmother in the 1950’s. YUP … way back when women weren’t supposed to hold jobs and men took liberties they shouldn’t have.
#metoo – has been exposing the creeps who still feel entitled. Thanks for relating to this and hope you’ve healed from the experience.

  13. That kind of crap saturates workplaces. Somehow or another their slimy paws are not held accountable. I’m sorry grandma had to lose her job because of a p.o.s. like him.
