The phone rang.
Hello, she whispered.
“Nereida, meet me at our usual spot on the beach.”
~~~~~~~~~
Memories from the first time they met, rapidly flooded her mind.
He was walking along the shore with a metal detector.
She was photographing the hazy afternoon sky.
He glanced her way.
‘Do you always photograph people passing by?’ he said.
‘No, she replied, blushing.’
Thus, the beginning of a whirlwind romance.
He found an antique timepiece that day; her wedding gift.
~~~~~~~~~
“I’ll bring the Bordeaux, he quickly added.”
“I can’t wait.”
She hung up the phone and smiled.
I wonder who that was?

I read some of the previous comments, which answered some of my questions. I was trying to figure out if this was a prank or what. I love that it ends with you not knowing though. Poor guy. Hopefully he and Nereida figure things out – unless she is Nereida. Especially then!

Wrong numbers can be frustrating for the one who doesn’t get the call. She may be waiting for him to call. Some predicament … Thanks

No, it isn’t a bio but I’ve had lots of telemaketers call me which is to me the wrong number. LOL Thanks, Isadora 😎

Why did she whisper when she answered the phone? Why did she have a memory of meeting. . ..him? Someone else? Why. didn’t she know who he was? Why didn’t she ask him?
Why did you leave us HANGING like that?! 🙂

HAHA … sorry about leaving everyone hanging. This was part of a longer story. When I shortened it for FF it had a lot of unanswered questions and several ways to go in the story. I tried to edi,t edit, edit and decided it might be best to leave it and let everyone decide why it all happened.
Actually, it’s based on a friend of mine who is in her 90’s. Her voice is very low when she answers the phone. She also has dementia but speaks to me of her wonderful memories.
Hope that helps … thank you for reading my story, Linda. I appreciate your visits and comments. HAve alovely week … Isadora 😎

LOL You must know me. My friends and family always tease me about how innocent I am about things even when they’re kidding.
She’s is a plethora of knowledge. I’ve learned a great many things about life from her. Sadly, her dementia causes her to forget who people are including me plus it makes her angry. It’s a difficult disease to watch.
Have a lovely day ~~~~ : )

Oh I like your thoughts on where the story could go. This was part of a longer story I cut down to 100 words. Originally, the woman had dementia. But, chortening it brought about many new directions. I thought I’d leave it like that and let the reader decide.
Thank you for your wonderful comment and for stopping by. Have a wonderful weekend.

Querida Isadora.
I was a little confused. Reading through the comments, I’m still not sure if it’s dementia or a wrong number. Either way, the last line works. But it makes me wonder if anyone will meet on the beach.

Querida Rochelle,
No worries on having two thoughts on the story. This story was longer and written for an entry to a short story contest. I shortened it. When I did and I read it back I realized this could go more than one way. I liked the idea of it and went with it. That’s where the last line came in. Always testing new waters here; otherwise, why write the same same.I’m pleased it challenged you and commented about it.
Have a fabulous 4th of July … God Bless America 🇺🇸
