Friday Fictioneers – The Interview

Dancing was on her mind all the time. Magda was obsessed with the idea of becoming an Alvin Ailey jazz dancer. She disliked practicing ballet for posture or tap for flexibility. The movements bored to tears. Jazz had a rhythm all its own.

She told her parents about moving to Hollywood after graduation. They tried to discourage her by saying she was foolish.

Entering the agency, she was awestruck by the photos on the walls.

Mr. W asked, How big a star do you want to be?

Musicals big, Magda replied.

There’s a price, you know.

Reality hit, Magda shuddered.

      Yes, indded, we do need to speak up without fear of reprocussions. Recntly, I was referred to a specialist by my primary. While in his office he kept squeezing my shoulder. It wasn’t necessay. I asked him to please discontinue touching me. I left his office never to return. It can happen anywhere. We, as women, have to take our power and use it. I feel very strongly about this subject due to having experienced many incidents throughout my journey through life. It happens everywhere not just in the theatrical world.     Don’t you just wish the Mr. Ws of this world did not think it was ok to make young women pay that price? I am still puzzled this went on for so long, and not just in Hollywood.

      I appreciate your warm-heartedness towards my protagonist. Women were afraid of not being heard or of the bannning by other agents through words from people like the Mr. W’s. I believe that’s what made them accept their horrific treament.
      I recently went to an MD who constantly squeezed my shoulder. It wasn’t necessary. I had to tell him to stop. I never returned to him. Men in power, at times, do not respect women. Yes, chnage will begin when we stop being afraid to speak up.Have a wonderful day … Be Safe

      I loved Alvin Ailey when I was taking dance classes in Mahattan. He was very new to the dance world when I was there in 80’s. Progressive and innovative 🕺💃👍
      I believe Magda did the right thing and stood firm in her moral compass which guided her intincts through adversity all through her career.     Mr W. I wonder who that could be? The sleaze behind the glamour has become all too public. Let’s hope it at least makes this sort of scene stop happening from now on.

      Aahhh yes, Iain you are a great detective. I believe his behavior was deplorable. He should have gotten more than he got but money talks and lawyers work harder when the money is bigger.
