Sometimes in life, you find a special friend.
Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop.
Someone who makes you believe there’s hope for the world.
Someone who convinces you that there’s an unlocked door; just waiting for you to open.
Someone who changes your life, just by being a part of it.
Elise was my special friend.
Today, she was placed in a nursing home.
I’m left alone.
We ate breakfast every day while telling stories of our childhood memories.
From now on, our days together will be through letter writing.
I’m left alone, without my special friend.

I think many seniors, once retired, reacquaint themselves with past friends or create a new one for socializing. I think this is what they’re missing with the current isolation. It’s a difficult time for many seniors who are alone and isolated. Their friends and their memories are what keep them getting up every day. I’ve noticed, being isolated for the most, that you quickly become non-existent to those you believed were friends.Retaining Walls

Amen to all you’ve said in your comment, Lisa. I live in Florida. Seniors retire here for sun and relaxation. Their families are living in other states. They can’t visit during this pandemic. Seniors die alone while missing their loved ones. A nurse is the only one holding their hands as they pass on. Sad … Sad … Sad 🙏🏻

I imagine this will count amongst the inevitable experiences one has to go through in life: saying goodbye to friends one way or another.

A heartbreaking story because of the truth within it. It is a difficult time in life, plus with COVID, many elders face a lonely and frightening time. Beautifully penned, Isadora!

I wrote about a senior who reached out to me due to isolation. If you have a moment and would like to read it … https://insidethemindofisadora.com/2020/12/21/cafe-chat-covid-friend/

Indeed, they are very lonely with this isolation. They’re high risk so people stay away to keep them safe. They feel neglected and left behind. A senior stranger reached out to me for this same reason. If you’d like to read about it …

Querida Rochelle,
It’s all part of this pandemic which is creating extreme isolation for the elderly. Their social life has been altered due to their high risk status. Also, they’re feeling it because they aren’t as tech savvy and may not have the tools. There’s painful loneliness for many. It’s a shame. Gracias, mi amiga por sus buenas palabras.
Amor y Carino, Be Safe … 😷 🙏🏻 😊 Isadora 😎

Thank you … seniors rely on their friendships once they’re homebound (plus with COVID). It’s sad when they’re left without them.

My heart weeps for you. This sounds too real to be fiction, and too real to be real. A hard situation for all.

Awww … thank you, Bear. It is fiction. I combined a few situations from people I have had senior experiences with. Being elderly is tougher than people think. With the limitations that begin to happen many are caught unprepared. I hope, we start respecting and caring more for our seniors. Thank you for your heartfelt comment. I hope you are healing from your recent losses. It’s been a tough year for you. Blessings 🙏🏻 Be Safe 😷

I fear many seniors have died more from loneliness these last few months. I’ve noticed, being isolated for the most, that you quickly become non-existent to those you believed were friends. Leaves me ever so thankful for online friends…not seen but not forgotten either.

Sadly, many of the issues seniors face are never addressed when they are younger. Although fiction, this is a tale from a few elderly I have seen that were caught unprepared for their senior years. Thank you for your kind comment. I appreciate it. Happy New Year 2021 … Be Safe 😷 Isadora 😎
