It was challenging to walk in shackles. My hands ache from the cuffs.
How would I manage if I fell?
They don’t care.
He was just a homeless bum sleeping on a sidewalk.
It doesn’t matter to anyone that someone is killing the sleeping homeless.
How would I know if the guy searching through my stuff was the killer?
Now, I walk in shackles because I defended my bare essentials.
Now, I’m a violently insane man on my way to the psych ward.
My view from the window is the iron gate with fancy scrollwork.
The metalsmith was an artist.

I suppose he will get it now that he’s in a pschiatric hospital. But, he could alos be a person whose angry due to the loss of employment due to Covid. There were many that lost jobs and wound up homeless. A greatly overlooked aftereffect from it. Thanks, Plaridel. I’m a bit behind but I’ll catch up. 😀

Querida Isadora.
Que triste. I’ve been hearing these stories on the news. One has to applaud your MC for defending himself. How quickly the system turned on him. Well written story with many nuances.

Querida Rochelle,
I’ve stopped watching the news. The assaults, crimes, hardships and plain bad news is just overwhelming sometimes. I do read the paper because I can turn the page. Ha Ha
The realtiy is, we don’t know if this man was a working citizen that lost his job during Covid and wound up on the streets. His anger may be more about the injustices of life rather than of mental illness. I read the article about these killings of the homeless and thought, “What else can they do to people when they are down on the ground and broken?”
Oh, how about killing them? YIKES!!! Tragic, indeed. Thank you … Purple Princess 💜
Abrazos y Carino,
Isadora 😎

A tragic story indeed, Isadora, especially hearing it’s a true one. It’s good to be reminded to be aware of those who suffer in our own communities. Take care!

It is a tragic story, Brenda. I read the NY Times to keep up with what goes on there. And, this was a recent news article. But, here in Florida there are homeless areas too. We need to accept that they are people that may have landed on hard times. Although many have mental issues the powers that be seem to disregard them like trash. Tragic, for sure.
Thank you for reading and commenting. Your photograph was a wonderfully inspiring one. Isadora 😎

I agree. Either way, they are vulnerable and need to be treated as such. I’m glad you liked the photo! 🙂

A tragic story. I like how you’ve portrayed the randomness of his thoughts – the disconnectedness reflects how he’s losing his grip.

I’m so pleased that his loss of freedom has created a downward spiral. There is so much more of where I can go. Due to our 100 word limit, I was unable to explore and write more on that. I think I’ll do a little more for a short story. I’m pleased you can appreciate this snippet. Have a wonderful Sunday … Isadora 😎

When I read that this is based on a true story, I cringed. The idea of a madman killing homeless and then a homeless man defends himself and goes to prison? Where is the justice 😦

Exactly, Lisa. There are many homeless that became this way from job loss during Covid. When I read the story in the NY Times, I was stunned. It’s really tragic. We are blessed to be able to maintain our lives and not be subjected to atrocities like this story unveils. Thanks for your suppostive visits and comments. Have a wonderful Sunday … Isadora 😎
