Wayne Dyer – Dies at 75

Wayne Dyer died on Saturday, August 29, 2015 in his home in Maui, Hawaii. He was 75. He was a long time self-help guru, spiritual teacher, best selling author of over 30 books, and lecturer.

He grew up in Chicago in a tumultuous household with an alcoholic father. He was placed in a succession of foster care at age 3.
As an adult in the 1960’s, he taught social studies at Detroit’s Pershing High School. Eventually, he became a counselor at a Catholic all-girls school Mercy High School in Farmington Hills. His motivational and self-help lectures at St. John’s University, where he was a professor, attracted a great many students to him. His first book ‘Your Erroneous Zones’, was published in 1976.

He was a long time friend of Deepok Chopra who tweeted: “Grieving deeply at sudden passing of my life long friend @DrWayneWDyer. I saw him 2 weeks ago at Chopra Center in good spirits.”

A close friend of Oprah Winfrey and contributor to the Super Soul Sunday on the Own channel Winfrey tweeted: “It was always a pleasure to talk to @DrWayneWDyer about life’s big questions. He always had big answers. RIP Wayne. You brought the Light.” Oprah.

On a personal note: In the 1970’s, I started my journey to self-discovery. Coming from what is, now known as, an abusive childhood. I was searching for answers for my emotional pain. Wayne Dyer, Deepok Chopra, Leo Buscaglia, Don Miguel Ruiz, Eckhart Tolle, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the Dali Lama have all been part of the roads that I’ve traveled up until this point. Do you judge others?

Are you snubbing your nose at the way another looks or lives their life?

It’s difficult to admit that we may have done this.

But, we all make assumptions about others based on our own beliefs and experiences.

With little thought, we continue with the assumptions and then believe them.

The story that follows says it best.

The Window from which We Look

A young couple moved into a new neighborhood.
Another couple, who resided across from them, was having breakfast the next morning.

The woman watched as her neighbor hung the  wash outside.

“That laundry is not very clean,” she said.

“She doesn’t know how to wash correctly.

Perhaps, she needs better laundry soap.’

  Her husband looked up from his newspaper, but remained silent.

Every time the neighbor would hang her wash out to dry,

The woman would make the same comments.

About one month later, the woman was surprised to see

nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband:

“Look, she has learned how to wash correctly.

I wonder who taught her this.”

The husband said, “I got up early this morning and  cleaned our windows.”

And so it is with life.

What we see when watching others

depends on the purity of the window through which we look.

Nurturing Yourself – with Impeccable Words

The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is a book I keep on my desk all the time.

It’s a small little book packed with power.

It isn’t a book that has to be read all the way through in order to get the messages he is writing about.

They’re contained in small chapters of words for thoughtful contemplation.

These are The Four Agreements –

The First Agreements is : Be Impeccable with Your Word
The Second Agreement : Don’t take Anything Personally
The Third Agreement : Don’t make Assumptions
The Fourth Agreement : Always Do your Best

To ‘Be Impeccable with Your Word’ is to avoid gossiping; avoid making empty promises that your intention was to not keep; avoid carelessly and thoughtlessly speaking aggressively to another; avoid turning others against someone because of your own feelings of inadequacy; avoid chastising and belittling another to build your own ego.

There are Four Agreements for living a nurturing life are simplistic in their wording but if we look at how we live our daily lives we must question if, in fact, we can do all of these everyday. It’s isn’t a book about being perfect or about being someone who is without frailty. These agreements are goals to aspire to. It’s about living your life in a way that not is effected by the turmoil of others.
