Make Magic Happen

Flash Fiction Sept.2015 - wpid-photo-20150921073220157The funeral was exactly the way my grandmother had wanted.

And, why wouldn’t it be?

She pre-paid and planned for it all before she died.

Always the forward-thinking woman, no one was going to be able to leave any details out.

The rose garden was to be her final resting place.

She’d say, “Where else would I want to be?”

“These roses have helped me create beautiful paintings that will live on in the homes of so many, long after I’m gone”.
Her garden was magical. She could grow just about anything.

I’m sure she’s looking down at us all and saying,“Pick up a paint brush and make magic happen”.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  1. What an inspiring piece of writing! Grandma seems like a liver and a go getter and I love that about the character. Rather than burden people after her death, she planned it before hand. She is one to be missed. A wonderful read 🙂

    • Thank you for seeing the character come to life in my story. I was inspired by my grandmother.
She was way before her times. She didn’t paint and wasn’t an artist but she was an incredible crafter.
Her creations were her well-received and requested. She taught me to be independent and that a woman
can do or be anything their heart desires.

  2. Such a lovely story, in which. we learn so much about the grandmother. Her love for her family, her garden and her painting shines through.

  3. Such an interesting look at this grandmother, in so few words — I feel like I can picture her, always a plan for things, always getting things done, fussing around to make sure things are just the way she likes them — and why wouldn’t they be? I can even picture her in the garden, painting, talking to herself about whether the painting is exactly the way she wants it yet. Or maybe talking to the painting itself!

    Very touching story.

  4. Great story. I was thinking the grandmother would then be looking up instead of looking down at them. But realized you are correct. My grandparents pre-paid for cremation. It made it so easy when the time came, but so strange, too, to have them now in a little box (OK, urn)! They died 14 years apart and now I have both of their “cremains” and will be scatterings their ashes within the following year.

  5. A lovely resting place, but I’d be scared my cats would dig me up and ask where their food was! A simply beautiful little story.

    • It can be difficult to imagine planning for our demise. But, on the other hand, it could be of comfort for
those left behind. Emotions aren’t clear when a loved one passes. If the details are in place, they can mourn
      in peace.
Thank you for viviting and leaving a comment. It’s greatly appreciated.

  8. I really like this, Izzy. There are lots of people who plan their funerals or at least the music and other aspects. I want my funeral, when it comes, to be a joyous celebration of my homecoming.

    • I think it’s a good idea; some might not agree. But, it makes it easier on the family. The first time I heard about this was
from my grandmother. She was a great lady.
I want my funeral to be like the ones in New Orleans. I think they have great funerals.
I’m happy you enjoyed this, Janet. Thank You.

  9. This is a wonderful story. The grandmother certainly was a forward thinking woman, having her funeral all planned out. I can imagine that she is up in heaven saying, “Paint something beautiful.” Great story and thank you for participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers Challenge.
